Cherry Stones

If you have wandered upon our site and are wondering why we decided to name our duet: ‘The Cherry Stone Duo’ we must first venture back to 1927. A. A. Milne (author of the ‘Winnie The Pooh’ novels, and a certain hero of mine) had just published the book of children’s poems: ‘Now We Are Six’. You may have this book stored away in the attic in a box titled ‘childhood’ or perhaps it is still sat on your bookshelf, I recommend reopening it and finding the poem titled: ‘Cherry Stones’

If not, simply read on…

Cherry Stones

Tinker, Tailor,
Soldier, Sailor,
Rich Man, Poor Man,
Ploughboy,
Thief

—And what about a Cowboy,
Policeman, Jailer,
Engine-driver,
Or Pirate Chief?
What about a Postman — or a Keeper at the Zoo?
What about the Circus Man who lets the people through?
And the man who takes the pennies for the round-abouts and swings?
Or the man who plays the organ, and the other man who sings?

What about a Conjuror with rabbits in his pockets?
What about a Rocket Man who’s always making rockets?
Oh, there’s such a lot of things to do and such a lot to be
That there’s always lots of cherries on my little cherry tree!

                                                                                             – A. A. Milne

Other than immediately jumping out at me this poem had an effect on the both of us. It is a poem that is relevant to anyone, no matter who you are. At some point in everyone’s life, you find yourself asking: what do I want to be? Or what do I want to do now?

Before deciding on a musical career, Emily and I were tempted by completely opposite careers to music. I wanted to go down a route of biochemistry, nevertheless, I knew the route of music would be much more fulfilling and enjoyable (so far, it’s safe to say I wouldn’t change a thing!). Emily herself wanted to study psychology, this is still something she wants to pursue at an older age. We spend many hours talking about how music affects the body and what benefits it has on recovery and health, her love for the subject is fantastic.

Perhaps you are sat here reading this blog currently undecided on what your next big step will be, maybe you have a child or a friend who is at that exciting point in life in which anything is possible. If this poem teaches us anything, is that we can truly follow any path we desire. And so, this is how we arrived at the name: “The Cherry Stone Duo”.

We would love to hear from you. Let us know your thoughts on the poem and our name.  Just head over to our contact page or click on one of our social media links and drop us a message.

I very much look forward to hearing from you.

Will,
